Brief descriptions of up to 4 recent notable accomplishments by faculty engaged in sustainability research, including names and department affiliations:
UCSB Faculty and Sustainability
Alan Jay Heeger is an American physicist, academic, and Nobel Prize laureate in chemistry who began his present appointment as a professor in the UCSB Physics Department and the Materials Department in 1982. He won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 2000 (along with Alan G. MacDiarmid and Hideki Shirakawa) for his pioneering research in and the co-founding of the field of semiconducting and metallic polymers. Among the uses of these polymers are flexible “plastic” transistors and electrodes, plastic batteries, electromagnetic interference shielding, static elimination, corrosion inhibition, and electroluminescent-polymer displays.
Nature often serves as a source of inspiration for the development of new technologies. In the field of medical diagnostics, for example, scientists have long taken advantage of the high affinity and specificity of biomolecules such as antibodies and DNA to detect molecular markers in the blood. Kevin W. Plaxo is a Professor of Chemistry at UCSB whose research into biomimicry has led to strategies to improve the performance of DNA detectors, and whose findings may aid efforts to build better medical diagnostics such as improved HIV or cancer tests.
David Valentine, a geochemist and Professor of Earth Science at UCSB, specializes in studying the interactions among microbes and those between microbes and the Earth system, and he was a member of the team of scientists which independently estimated how fast gases and oil were leaking during the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010. The team utilized unique surface and subsurface chemical measurements and analysis to obtain their results: "Not only does this chemical approach yield an independent estimate of flow rate for the ruptured well, but it also helps to define the pathways traveled by the oil and gas after release to the ocean. These results represent another step in our quest to understand what went where, and what happened to it all."
Dr. Steven P. DenBaars is a Professor of Materials and Co-Director of the Solid-State Lighting and Energy Center at UCSB. His specific research interests include growth of wide-bandgap semiconductors (GaN based) and their application to Blue LEDs, lasers, and high power electronic devices. This research has led to the first U.S. university demonstration of a Blue GaN laser diode. Amongst his other prestigious awards, DenBaars was the recipient of the NSF Young Investigator award in 1994 and the IEEE Fellow award in 2005.
Kum-Kum Bhavnani is a Professor of Sociology at UCSB whose research interests include development, feminist, and cultural studies. Her first film, The Shape of Water, is a feature documentary that tells the stories of poor but determined women confronting the destructive development in their countries and offers a new angle on globalization, human rights, and social justice. Her film Nothing like Chocolate tells the moving story of an anarchist chocolatier whose tiny and unorthodox chocolate company challenges the global model of large-scale chocolate production and its exploitation of child labor.
Stephanie LeMenager is an Associate Professor in the English Department at UCSB, where she has taught since 2000 after receiving her PhD from Harvard in 1999. Her central interests include 19th and 20th century U.S. literature and cultures, literatures of the North American West, environmental theories and representations, and rhetorics of slavery and freedom. She is the author of several articles and the book Manifest and Other Destinies: Territorial Fictions of the Nineteenth Century United States which won the 2005 Thomas J. Lyon Award for Best Book in Western American Literary Studies. Professor LeMenager is currently at work on her second book project, This Is Not a Tree: Cultures of US Environmentalism in the Twilight of Oil.
