Homesteading for All
Urban Homesteading for All Talk with Author Rachel Kaplan
12:00-1:00pm
Env. Studies Conference RM, Floor 4L Bren

If you thought living in a city limited you to recycling plastic bottles and shopping at a local farmer’s market, think again. Sustainable living can touch every aspect of your life. It’s available to everyone, no matter where you live. In cities and towns across the country, a growing number of urban dwellers are turning their homes into mini-farms, complete with chickens, rabbits, and goats. These urban farmers work cooperatively to create water, energy, and waste-saving oases of abundance that enhance neighborhoods and communities. Homesteading in cities and towns is a pioneering effort in the creation of local economies and revitalized urban landscapes—a proactive response to some of our culture’s thorniest problems.

The Garden Film Screening
March 20th, 12:00-3:00PM in the MCC
The 14 acre community garden in South Central Los Angeles was the largest of it's kind in the United States. It was started as a form of healing after the devastating L.A. riots in 1992. Since that time, the South Central Farmers have created a miracle in one of the country's most blighted neighborhoods by growing their own food, feeding their families, and creating a community. But now, bulldozers threaten their oasis. The Garden is an unflinching look at the struggle between these urban farmers and the City of Los Angeles and a powerful developer who want to evict them and build warehouses.
