The following are examples of how UC San Diego engaged in structured assessment processes during the previous three years to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion on campus. 

 

STUDENTS 
 
University of California Undergraduate Experience Survey (Spring 2024)

The University of California Undergraduate Experience Survey (UCUES) is biennial online survey administered at UC San Diego and each of the undergraduate UC campuses. UCUES data is used for many institutional purposes, such as identifying obstacles to undergraduate success, providing undergraduate student feedback to faculty and administrators, and learning more about students’ financial concerns.

The UCUES 2024 survey instrument includes a section devoted to Campus Climate for diversity and inclusiveness as part of a set of core questions. Questions in this section ask students to indicate how strongly they agree or disagree with the following statements: 

 
1. Overall, I feel comfortable with the campus climate for diversity and inclusion in my major 

2. Overall, I feel comfortable with the climate for diversity and inclusion in my classes 

3. Overall, I feel comfortable with the climate for diversity and inclusiveness at this university 

4. UC San Diego is a welcoming campus 

5. Students of my gender are respected on this campus 

6. Students of my political beliefs are respected on this campus 

7. Students of my race/ethnicity are respected don this campus 

8. Students of my religious beliefs are respected on this campus 

9. Students of my sexual orientation are respected on this campus 

10. Students of my socio-economic status are respected on this campus 

11. Students of my immigration background are respected on this campus 

12. Students with a disability or condition like mine are respected on this campus 

The Staff@Work Survey is conducted annually and asks staff, both represented and not-represented, to contribute anonymous feedback about perceptions of their workplace. One of the six statistcally validated measures focuses on department diversity and climate. 

The 2023 Staff@Work Survey asked the following questions on diversity and climate:

  1. Department all welcomed 

  1. All cultures treated fairly 

  1. Sexual orientations treated fairly

Academics@UCSD Survey (Spring 2024) 

The Academics@UCSD survey tool was developed by Tritonlytics™ in partnership with the Center for Faculty Diversity and Inclusion and the Office of Institutional Research to better understand the experiences of Academic employees at UC San Diego, including faculty, researchers, and librarians. The intent is to utilize this information to guide UC San Diego in creating the most personally and professionally fulfilling community possible. 

The survey asks questions about satisfaction with the academic work environment, including access to support, resources, the academic reward structure, and department culture, as well as questions about interpersonal behaviors in the workplace. The survey questions were reviewed and vetted by faculty focus groups comprised of faculty across disciplines. 

The survey has been statistically validated to measure key dimensions concerning Satisfaction with the University, Department/Unit Values and Culture, Department/Unit Effectiveness, Academic Welfare, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. 

The 2024 Academics@UCSD Survey asked the following questions on diversity, equity, and inclusion: 

  1. Disability inclusion 

  1. All cultures treated fairly 

  1. All sexual orientation treated fairly 

  1. All gender identities treated fairly 

  1. Support for reported behavior 

  1. Satisfied with diversity programs

UC Accountability Report (2023) 

 
The 2023 UC Accountability Report provides the sixteenth annual comprehensive assessment of the University's progress in meeting key teaching, research and public service goals across its 10 campuses. The data will inform the University's strategic planning, budgeting and performance management, as well as help the governing Board of Regents identify the most important policy issues facing UC. 
 
This version includes over 100 individual indicators across 13 chapters, assessing progress in areas including diversity. Indicators for diversity are as follows: 
1. Racial/ethnic distribution of the UC undergraduate pipeline 
2. Share of high school graduates, applicants, admits, and enrollees

3. Share of transfer-ready applicants, admits, and enrollees

Results of the UCUES Survey for UC San Diego showed that overall, students most strongly agreed with the following statements: 

  • Students with a disability or condition like mine are respected on this campus (51%) 

  • Students of my immigration background are respected on this campus (26%)

  • Students of my sexual orientation are respected on this campus (26%) 

On the other hand, students disagreed the most with the following statements: 

  • Students of my political beliefs are respected on this campus (Strongly disagree – 5%) 

  • Overall, I feel comfortable with the climate for diversity and inclusiveness at this university (Disagree – 5%) 

 

STAFF 
 
UC San Diego Staff@Work Survey (2023)

Overall, the level of satisfaction with diversity and climate among staff received high ratings. Staff were most satisfied with the fair treatment of sexual orientations (average score: 4.32). Potential areas for ongoing improvement are: Feeling valued by department (average score: 3.98) and department diversity programs (average score: 3.93).

Academics@UCSD Survey (Spring 2024) 

Overall, the level of satisfaction with diversity, equity, and inclusion among faculty received high ratings. Faculty were most satisfied with the fair treatment of sexual orientations (average score: 4.29) and gender identities (average score: 4.16). Potential areas for ongoing improvement are: Disability inclusion (average score: 3.70) and commitment to diversity (average score: 3.80).

UC Accountability Report (2023) 

 
The data will inform the University's strategic planning, budgeting and performance management, as well as help the governing Board of Regents identify the most important policy issues facing UC. 
 
Summary of results from the UC Accountability Report Chapter 7 Diversity Results for the UC system includes: 

  • UC freshman enrollees do not reflect the diversity of California’s high school graduates. 

  • Gaps still exist between the share of transfer-ready California community college students and the share of UC applicants, admits, and new enrollees for African Americans and Hispanic/Latino(a). 

  • UC academic doctoral programs are a strong draw for international students who did not earn their bachelor’s degree in the United States. 

  • In graduate academic doctoral programs, UC Is approaching parity with the gender diversity of U.S. institutions, except in some disciplines.  

  • Undergraduates have the highest proportion of underrepresented students. Faculty are less diverse overall.

How the results are used in shaping policy, programs, and initiatives:

The UC San Diego Strategic Plan for Inclusive Excellence (https://diversity.ucsd.edu/initiatives/strategic-plan.html) is a collective framework for campus engagement, strategic action, assessment, and accountability to shape the future of UC San Diego. Results from the aforementioned surveys help shape strategies and priorities for the plan. The Strategic Accountability Process (SAP) is the accountability measure that UC San Diego uses to assess the Strategic Plan or Inclusive Excellence, and progress is communicated through the tri-annual Progress Update report. Results are shared via an all-campus announcement and also shared on the Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) website.
