The Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (https://diversity.ucsd.edu/) is a senior leadership position at UC San Diego, responsible for promoting and advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives across the university. The office is led by Dr. Becky R. Petitt, who serves as the Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer.

The office's mission is to foster a culture of inclusive excellence, promote diversity, equity, and inclusion, and address the needs of underrepresented groups on campus. The Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion works closely with other senior leaders, faculty, staff, and students to develop and implement strategies that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of university life. 

Some of the key responsibilities of the office include: 

  • Developing and implementing diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives and programs 

  • Providing training and education on diversity, equity, and inclusion topics 

  • Conducting research and analysis to identify areas of improvement and track progress Collaborating with other units and departments to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion 

  • Serving as a resource and advocate for underrepresented groups on campus

UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

UC San Diego has a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Requirement (DEI) for all its undergraduate students (https://undergrad.ucsd.edu/programs/dei/index.html#For-Faculty--DEI-Course-Require). A knowledge of diversity, equity, and inclusion is required of all candidates for a bachelor's degree who begin their studies at UC San Diego in lower-division standing as of the Fall 2011 or thereafter, or in upper-division standing in Fall 2013 or thereafter. 

 

GRADUATE STUDENTS

All graduate students are required to complete two mandatory online trainings, 1) Sexual Assault Presentation: Graduate Students and 2) Diversity Equity and Inclusion. The Sexual Assault Prevention: Graduate Students course provides tools to identify, prevent and report sexual harassment, sexual assault, dating violence, domestic violence and stalking. The Diversity Equity and Inclusion course highlights the multiple identities that we all have with a focus on creating inclusive spaces for all through clear and compassionate communication. FACULTY & STAFF

All UC employees (i.e., Academic Staff, Non-Academic Staff, and Student Employees) are required to take the Sexual Violence and Sexual Harassment Prevention Training. (Mandatory Harassment Prevention Training: https://blink.ucsd.edu/HR/policies/sexual/index.html)  

The UC Learning Center is a web-based learning management system used across the University of California, specifically for training and development. It enables UC San Diego faculty, staff, and affiliates to enroll in departmental and Staff Education & Development courses online. The UC Learning Center allows users to register for in-person activities offered at UC San Diego, as well as access online activities and view their training transcripts.

In 1998, former Chancellor Dynes along with vice chancellors, the academic senate chair and student leadership issued the Principles of Community. The Principles were developed by the Diversity Leadership Team (comprised of UC San Diego vice chancellors and department directors), and many other members of the UC San Diego community, including faculty, staff, and students. 

The goals of the Principles include: 

  • Providing fair treatment for faculty, staff, and students 

  • Encouraging a climate of fairness, cooperation, and professionalism 

  • Fostering inclusiveness, respect, and a welcoming environment 

  • Promoting collaborative attitudes and actions
