COMMITTEE CHARGE: 

The Advisory Committee on Sustainability (ACS) advises the Chancellor of University California, San Diego through the Vice Chancellor – Operations Management and Capital Programs regarding sustainable methods and practices regarding the planning design, development, management, programs and operations of the Institution. The purpose of the ACS is to provide a forum to bring together academic programs, facility planning, design and construction and campus operating interests in sustainability. 

The committee will engage Faculty, students and staff while putting into practice the principles of environmental stewardship in its operations and will consistently identify areas of improvement in order to continue to drive greater understanding in the earth sciences and related fields. 

The Advisory Committee on Sustainability includes representatives from faculty, staff and students (both graduate and undergraduate), including leaders of key campus organizations already involved in environment and sustainability activities. Representatives are appointed by the Faculty Senate, Associated Students, Graduate Student Association, Staff Association, Health System, Medical School, etc. The ACS is chaired by a designee of the Vice Chancellor – Operations Management and Capital Programs. 

  • Share information about education, research, outreach, planning, and operational activities in the context of environmental stewardship and sustainability with the implicit intent to develop policy and goals that guide individual units across the organization. 

  • Foster a culture of sustainability across the University by being ambassadors and models of sustainability in their representative departments or units. 

  • Make recommendations, supported with fiscally responsive analysis, on sustainability programs, policy and services, to VC-OMCP. 

 

COMMITTEE CHARGE:  

The UC San Diego Library has sustainability built into its strategic plan. In support of this goal, the Library sponsors the Library Sustainability Committee (LSC), an internal, staff-run committee charged with making recommendations for greener practices within the Library and also sharing sustainability information and best practices with Library staff. The Library embeds sustainable values into its organizational culture by streamlining operations, conserving resources, diverting waste, and ensuring an equitable and socially just workplace.  

The mission of the LSC is to educate, develop awareness, and to promote an internal culture that integrates sustainability into the daily habits of the Library community. The committee’s charge is as follows: 

  • Serving in an advisory capacity to the Library, the committee develops and recommends comprehensive strategies and institutional practices that promote sustainability, including measures to make more efficient use of resources as well as decrease production of waste. 

  • Collaborates with various Library programs to promote sustainability in the workplace. 

  • Educates the Library community, using various communication avenues, about sustainability topics and promoting sustainable practices within the Library. 

  • Collaborates with various groups on campus to share information and best practices related to sustainability.

Activities and substantive accomplishments during the previous three years:  

  • Hiring of Campus Sustainability Officer in summer 2023 to lead and facilitate UC San Diego’s campuswide climate and sustainability efforts.  

  • Development of UC San Diego’s Decarbonization Study (to be completed fall 2024). 

  • Partnership with Seventh College’s Synthesis Program and focus on living laboratory for decarbonization.  

  • Development of UC San Diego’s Climate Adaptation and Resilience Plan (to be completed fall 2024). 

  • Input on new building projects, open and green space, sustainable transportation, and zero waste initiatives.
