The number of students enrolled in Part 1 of this credit is listed as 30,583. This number accounts for all full-time and part-time undergraduate students, which represents UC San Diego’s predominant student body. Also, 30,583 is the total undergraduate student headcount as of spring 2022, which is the same timeframe in which students participated in the most recent University of California Undergraduate Experience Survey (UCUES) (https://ir.ucsd.edu/third-week/index.html). Consistent with AASHE's note above on headcounts, this number excludes graduate students because graduate students do not participate in UCUES. The number reported in PRE-5 is listed as 42,189 - which accounts for ALL UC San Diego undergraduate and graduate students in fall 2023.

The community service data for Part 1 and 2 was derived from the 2022 UCUES (https://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/about-us/information-center/ucues-data-tables-2022), a longitudinal online census of all undergraduate students in the UC system. It is conducted during the spring quarter of even numbered years, and hosted by the UC Office of the President. An important part of this survey is measuring the number of undergraduate students that participate in community service and the number of community service hours per student. In 2022, UC San Diego had a 30 percent response rate (https://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/about-us/information-center/student-survey-completion-and-response-rates), with 38 percent of respondents having participated in community service on or off campus. The data from the survey are representative of the overall campus and were extrapolated to the larger undergraduate population.

The total number of student community service hours contributed annually was 2,174,730 hours. This figure was calculated using the results of the UCUES in which students reported the average amount of hours students allocated to community service on a weekly basis during the academic school year (30 weeks in an academic year). To arrive at the reported number of students engaged in community service, the percentage of responses to each category (0 hours, 1-5 hours, 6-10 hours, …, 26-30 hours, more than 30 hours) was extrapolated to the entire undergraduate student body. Each category was then conservatively assigned an average number of hours worked (1-5 hours: 3 hour average; 6-10 hours: 8 hour average; 11-15 hours: 13 hour average; 16-20 hours: 18 hour average, 21-25 hours: 23 hour average, 26-30 hours: 28 hour average; more than 30 hours: 31 hour average) to arrive at the total number of student community service hours contributed weekly, which was multiplied by 30 to find the total number of hours contributed annually.
