A brief description of the institution’s efforts to support alternative fuel and power technology in its motorized fleet:
UC San Diego is committed to supporting alternative fuels and clean technology in its fleet. Among the actions taken to promote our carbon reduction efforts include the following:
Our Fleet Manager (Greg Nishihira) was a co-presenter at the 2019 Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education conference on the topic session “Right-sizing the Fleet”
A pair of UC San Diego staff (LEED AP Associate Engineer Kevin Norris with Building Commissioning and Sustainability and the Fleet Manager) led a nationally promoted DOE round-table on Electric Vehicles in 2019 that aimed to educate anyone who was interested in exploring fleet uptake of the vehicle type
UC San Diego’s Fleet Manager is co-chair of the UC wide Fleet Sustainability Working Group committee that reports to the Office of the President’s Sustainability Office who works on carbon reducing policy guidelines as they pertain to the University of California’s campus fleets
Over 64% of the campus fleet is classified in either hybrid vehicles or AFV categories, which include CNG, E-85 Flex-fuel, electric, hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles. If you include our vehicles that operate on renewable diesel this number increases to 66%
The Fleet Manager represents UC San Diego by serving as a board member of the San Diego Regional Clean Cities Coalition
Our campus was recently recognized by the “100 Best Fleets” organization for our efforts by being ranked the 15 th greenest fleet in North America in 2020. Recent awards also include those issued by the San Diego Regional Clean Cities Coalition for Green Fleet Leadership and a Diamond Award, Platinum Tier, from the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG).
Together with our Director of Strategic Energy Initiatives, Byron Washom, and Associate Engineer of Building Commissioning and Sustainability, Kevin Norris, UC San Diego has hosted multiple tours which highlight our sustainability projects to multiple representatives of public agencies and with those with clean energy interests.
The campus continues to promote special electric vehicle (EV) leasing and purchase offers aimed at UC San Diego faculty, staff and students, and we continue to add new charging platforms. The campus continues to be the recipient of multiple research grants and funding opportunities that support our “Vehicle to Grid” research.
