The UC San Diego Office of the Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion works to ensure that our campus community is one of equal opportunity, where mutual respect and cross-cultural collaboration is fostered and open dialogue is encouraged. UC San Diego has many resources that support the recruitment and retention of historically underserved populations, deepen understanding and challenge misconceptions surrounding diversity, and develop proactive leaders who advocate for inclusion.

A brief description of the institution’s cultural competence trainings and activities for each of the groups identified above:
A knowledge of diversity, equity, and inclusion is required of all candidates for a bachelor’s degree who begin studies at UC San Diego in lower-division standing in fall 2011 or thereafter, or in upper-division standing in fall 2013 or thereafter. This requirement shall be satisfied by passing, with a grade not lower than C– or P, a one-quarter, four-unit course expressly approved by the Undergraduate Council for that purpose.This requirement may be satisfied by presenting proof of having passed a one-quarter, four-unit transfer course, or its equivalent, at a recognized institution of higher education, community colleges included, that has been articulated to one of the courses approved by the Undergraduate Council for the purpose of meeting the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion requirement.Courses fulfilling this requirement must focus primarily on theoretical and analytical frameworks relevant to understanding diversity, equity, and inclusion in the United States. Among possible frameworks are race, ethnicity, gender, religion, sexuality, language, ability/disability, class, age; and pay significant attention to at least one of the following groups: African Americans, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, Hispanics or Chicanos/Latinos, and Native Americans; and provide a pedagogical framework for better understanding one’s particular identity in relation to that of other identities discussed in the course. UC San Diego faculty, staff, and students are expected to practice the University's Principles of Community, which include valuing the cultural diversity of UC San Diego because it enriches our lives and the University, celebrating this diversity, and supporting respect for all cultures, by both individuals and the University as a whole. We are a university that adapts responsibly to cultural differences among the faculty, staff, students, and community. Included in faculty and staff performance evaluations and reviews are how well each are meeting and promoting these principles. Any interested faculty and staff can participate in the University's Culturally Competent Management Program (CCMP), intended for those who direct the work of others, this three-part program is designed to equip managers with knowledge, skills, creative strategies and tools to build and enhance diversity management competence and judgment.
