A brief description of the institution’s efforts to support alternative fuel and power technology in its motorized fleet:
UC San Diego is committed to supporting alternative fuels and clean technology in its fleet. Winner of a 2017 San Diego Regional Clean Cities Coalition for a Green Fleet Leadership Award, our university also received a 2016 Diamond Award, Platinum Tier, from the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) in recognition of the campus's commitment to alternative forms of transportation. Our efforts include the following: - In 2010, UC San Diego commissioned a CNG fueling station in support of the growing CNG fleet. Since then the station has been made accessible to faculty, students, staff, affiliates, and vendors of the university. In 2010, UC San Diego was the first university to have five, all-electric CNG hybrid electric shuttle buses. By the end of 2017 we had converted all remaining diesel to R100 and all CNG to RCNG through the REDEEM program. On-going expansion of EV charging infrastructure: - As of 2017, we have installed an additional 18 Level II EV chargers bringing the campus total to 78 Level II and 4 DC fast chargers. In addition to these, the campus added 50 "make ready stub ups" that can be used for future charger installations. Along with the campus' 8 Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) chargers, this makes UC San Diego's EV charging infrastructure one of the largest and most diverse of any university campus in the country. - We won a $4.2 million CEC grant to San Diego-based Nuvve Corporation. Nuvve and its partners will also add more funding to deploy its "Vehicle to Grid" charging platforms on 50 new UC San Diego electric vehicle chargers, allowing parked electric vehicles to become part of grid as battery storage: http://ucsdnews.ucsd.edu/pressrelease/nuvve_and_uc_san_diego_to_demonstrate_vehicle_to_grid_technology. - More than 300 members of the campus community have taken advantage of special electric vehicle (EV) leasing and sales offers. Due to its success, the UC San Diego program is now being expanded to the entire UC system. Campus fleet purchases of EV's alone have averted well over 2.75 million pounds of carbon dioxide. In 2018, the UC Carbon Neutrality Initiative is coordinating support for campus fleet services to develop campus-specific plans to reach net-zero carbon emissions from fleet vehicles by 2025.
