There are several types of faculty that might fall under the general category of "adjunct faculty": https://academicaffairs.ucsd.edu/_files/aps/docs/LSOE_FAQ.pdf
Lecturer with Potential for Security of Employment, Lecturer with Security of Employment, Sr. Lecturer with Security of Employment, and Distinguished Sr. Lecturer with Security of Employment are expected to teach up to six courses per year. The exact assignment and number of courses is negotiated between the department and the LSOE.Averaging the minimum salary of all of these positions, divided by a max of 6 courses taught per year, we have an estimated $13,458 per course taught. Of course these faculty do service, advising, etc., so to be conservative it might be best to say they make $9,000 per course.
Non-Senate Faculty types includes Non-Senate Instructional Unit 18; Pre-6 Lecturer and Senior Lecturer - Academic Year; Continuing Lecturer and Senior Lecturer - Academic Year; and Supervisor of Teacher Education. As these positions tend to make less than the LSOE's, we have averaged these salaries to come up with the average compensation paid per course, excluding Supervisor of Teaching Education as they may not teach but instead observe student teaching. Appointees to the Lecturer/Senior Lecturer titles in Unit 18 shall teach nine instructional workload courses (IWC) during the entire academic
year (or three courses per quarter) when employed at 100% time. An instructional workload course is one that is regularly scheduled, requires significant academic preparation by the instructor outside the class, and meets a minimum of three hours per week. Averaging the minimum starting annual salaries for these positions and assuming the max teaching load of 9 courses, we estimate an average $7,789 per course.
