A brief description of how sustainability is included prominently in new student orientation (including how multiple dimensions of sustainability are addressed):
The Resident Advisors (RA’s) for Freshman and Sophomores living on campus are educated about campus sustainability and conservation during their training process lead by UC San Diego’s Housing, Dining and Hospitality. The RA’s are then able to pass on sustainability information to new students living on campus during orientation and throughout the year. UC San Diego hosts “First Friday,” an annual event for new and returning students which highlights campus features, including sustainability efforts. Students can visit the Sustainability Resource Center as part of this annual event and partake in fun sustainable activities and win sustainable prizes. Each of our six colleges conducts its own freshmen and transfer student orientation, and sustainability information is included via printed materials or events up to the discretion of the team of students and staff organizing these orientations. Staff and students from the Sustainability Programs Office table at as many of these college orientation events as possible.
UCSD Housing and Dining has its own sustainability manager who supervises our equivalent of an eco-rep program (EcoNauts) and does outreach throughout the year to students on sustainability while living on campus: https://hdh.ucsd.edu/sustainability/.
