A brief description of the institution’s green athletics program, including the specific initiatives selected above:
In 2017 UC San Diego's Recreation Department (formerly split in two between Recreation and Sports Facilities, but they were merged in 2018) began a sustainability program that included a first-ever series of zero waste basketball games; a CalRecycle grant to do a waste audit and provide new recycling bins and signage in Rec facilities; composting of food vendor scraps and landscaping waste in Earth Cubes; a green cleaning audit and program with WAXIE; and water conservation efforts (including on sports fields) in partnership with Facilities Management. While the 2018 merger of Sports Facilities and Recreation has slowed the program down some, it continues and we anticipate it being reinvigorated when all merger activities are complete.
