UC Merced campus policy states that all new construction buildings on campus achieve a minimum of LEED Gold certification under LEED Green Building Design and Construction.

A brief description of how the institution ensures compliance with green building design and construction guidelines and policies:

All new permanent buildings on the UC Merced campus are required to achieve minimum LEED Silver since 2002 and, as of March 2009, minimum LEED Gold. Since 2005, UC Merced has an on-campus LEED coordinator working with every building project to ensure compliance, gather documentation, and submit projects for review by the U.S.Green Building Council.

The GSF provided in this credit only takes into consideration buildings that are LEED certified based on LEED certification criteria. All LEED projects must be constructed and operated on a permanent location on existing land. No project that is designed to move at any point in its lifetime may pursue LEED certification. LEED Certification also does not allow for certification of temporary buildings per the minimum program requirements. The campus does include in its site boundary temporary buildings.
