A brief description of the cultural competence trainings and activities:
The UCM Office of Student Life provides myriad activities, events, and training related to cultural diversity, identity development and social justice issues. Some titles of programs include: the Safe Zone Training, Social Justice Retreat, Reel talk discussion series, and the Women's Empowerment Conference. Specific descriptions of just two of the many trainings offered include: Safe Zone Training - The Safe Zone Project is a two-part training experience dedicated to training allies for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) communities. The training encourages participants to examine personal knowledge and beliefs in order to raise awareness and discuss ways to make safe and welcoming spaces for the LGBT community on campus and beyond. Social Justice Retreat - The annual Social Justice Retreat is held each fall semester and is open to all undergraduate students who are interested in learning about, as well as those who are looking for opportunities to further their understanding of social justice and equality. Each year a group of about 30 students from many backgrounds, identities, and belief systems are taken to an off-campus retreat location where they engage in an experiential based, thought provoking, and unforgettable experience.
