Each year UC Merced selects a common read and schedules activities and presentations throughout the year that coincide with this book. For the 2009-10 academic year, the book was The World Without Us, by Alan Weisman. This book explores humanity's impact on the planet and some of the lectures/activities that were scheduled that year included: a showing and discussion of the documentary, Flow, about the world water crisis; an interactive lecture on sustainability by the campus' director of sustainability; and a module in the first year CORE curriculum about California's water wars.
