Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Alignment of Codes of Conduct for Trademark Licensees with Licensee Performance for Better Decision Making and a Stronger Licensing Program
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
UCLA has for several years measured the performance of all trademark licensees on social sustainability metrics, using that data as criteria upon which to grant and renew trademark licenses. Using data that provided insight into each licensee’s ability to actively ensure that its workplaces and those of its supply chain are transparent, safe, and fair, UCLA reduced its licensee base by more than 50% with no loss of royalty revenue. Currently a qualified group of 145 companies have demonstrated the willingness and ability to develop management systems required to meet code of conduct standards for business and human rights.
In 2020, UCLA Trademarks and Licensing is going beyond social sustainability with a new assessment, EcoVadis, that encompasses social and environmental sustainability, ethics, and sustainable procurement practices of licensees.
