A brief description of the single-use disposable plastics that have been banned or eliminated:

UCLA will take the following measures to reduce single-use plastics:
1. Eliminate Plastic Bags in all retail and foodservice establishments in campus facilities or located on university owned land effective July 1, 2020.
2. Replace disposable single-use plastic Foodware Accessory Items in all Foodservice establishments operating within UCLA owned facilities with Locally Compostable alternatives or reusables and provide only upon request no later than July 1, 2020.
3. Require that by January 1, 2022 all dine-in facilities and to-go facilities operating within UCLA owned property with associated seating must provide reusable Foodware Items for food consumed onsite
4. Require that all To-go Facilities within UCLA owned property replace single-use plastic Foodware Items with reusable or Locally Compostable alternatives no later than July 1, 2020.
5. Eliminate the sale and free distribution of single-use plastic water and beverage bottles and non-recyclable water containers in UCLA Owned property at foodservice facilities, events (including internal and external catering), convenience stores, and department meetings, and provide reusable alternatives no later than January 1, 2023. UCLA will prioritize the installation of hydration stations to support this transition and avoid a shift to less healthy alternatives.
6. When selecting prepackaged, sealed food that is mass produced off premises and resold on all UCLA owned property, preference should be given to vendors that utilize locally compostable or recyclable packaging options.
7. As feasible, transition from bioplastics to marine degradable materials on all UCLA owned property.

All departments shall also identify and reduce the use of single-use plastics that are not explicitly outlined in the above policy including, but not limited to, poly-bagged products, plastic films and wraps, and plastic packaging.
