A brief description of the incentive program(s):
UCLA Health Professional Schools Faculty Course Innovation Workshop
Integration of Climate Change, Sustainability & Health Issues into UCLA Medical, Dental, Nursing, and Public Health Courses
UC President Janet Napolitano charged the Global Climate Leadership Council to advise UC on achieving the ambitious goal of carbon neutrality on our campuses by 2025 while also providing guidance for furthering its other longstanding sustainability goals. The goal is to ensure that the entire UC system plays a leadership role with respect to climate change, sustainability, and their links to health.
Included in the goal is an educational initiative that will build a broad base of UC faculty health sciences members who can form a community of practice engaged in ongoing dialogue and sharing of educational best practices on climate change and sustainability healthcare education. The effort aims to reach and educate health sciences professional students to understand the impact of climate change and sustainability on health.
The Faculty Course Curriculum Workshop at UCLA mentors participating faculty to add innovative curriculum content on climate change and sustainability into existing courses across the health disciplines. The workshop was lead by Professor Wendie Robbins, School of Nursing, (wrobbins@sonnet.ucla.edu) and was held at the UCLA School of Nursing on Wednesday, June 12, 2019, 9:30 am to 1 pm.
The workshop was sponsored by the UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability, the Sustainable LA Grand Challenge and the UCLA Academic Senate, with funding provided by the Health Sciences and Services Working Group and the Faculty Engagement and Education Working Group of the UC Office of the President’s Global Climate Leadership Council.
A total of 23 people participated in the 2019 workshop including 15 faculty participants and eight people as organizers or presenters. The faculty participants represented eight different academic units including; Pediatric Dentistry, School of Nursing, Public Health, Epidemiology, Community Health Sciences, Health Policy & Management, Environmental Health Sciences, and Geffen School of Medicine. A follow-up networking event will be held in Fall 2019 for participants to share their revised courses with each other and the larger community of health professional school faculty. There is also interest in creating an ongoing series of workshops aimed at health system faculty.
