So far, UCLA's water conservation efforts have reduced annual water use by over 70 million gallons since 2000. Our comprehensive approach to water conservation includes water recycling, high efficiency fixtures such as ultra-low flow urinals, drought tolerant landscaping, and smart climatologically-based irrigation and drip irrigation. New projects, such as a filtration system to treat water for re-use in our cogeneration plant, are under evaluation by the UCLA Water Taskforce, a group that includes staff and administration from Plumbing, Energy Services, Capital Programs, and the Medical Center, as well as faculty from the Engineering Department. UCLA’s Sustainability Coordinator is working with the other nine campuses in the University of California system to develop a new section of the Sustainable Practices Policy focused on water conservation and efficiency.
Due to metering issues in 2009, we are using data from 2008 rather than 2009, which is the performance year for other STARS credits.
