A brief description of steps taken to ensure that e-waste is recycled responsibly, workers’ basic safety is protected, and environmental standards are met:
Facilities Management at UCLA collects all e-waste items and Environment, Health and Safety collects e-waste items from the residential community surrounding campus to assure that all ewaste is recycled responsibly.
OSS-Spectrum is the vendor that collects the campus e-waste.The California Integrated Waste Management Board and the California Department of Toxic Substances Control certify OSS-Spectrum as an E-Waste Handler.OSS-Spectrum staff are trained in the maintenance and refurbishment of E-Waste materials, such as computers, monitors, and toner cartridges, and all E-Waste which can be successfully refurbished by OSS-Spectrum is donated to after-school educational programs. Items which cannot be refurbished are recycled.
OSS-Spectrum is a non-profit organization which supports service-disabled veterans and their families. It is certified by the State of California as a "Disabled Veteran Business Enterprise," and the majority of their staff is comprised of service-disabled Vietnam veterans.
Facilities Management staff receive safety training regarding the handling of E-waste and all E-waste is carefully documented and labeled to ensure safety. Cartridges specifically get sent free-of charge through campus mail to the recycling coordinator who can therefore assure they are recycled properly.

Departments are required to go through Facilities Management or Environment, Health and Safety to dispose of their e-waste properly.

A brief description of the electronic waste recycling program for student-generated materials :
UCLA and the city of Los Angeles operate a S.A.F.E center for hazardous and electronic waste disposal. Students and other community members can use the UCLA drop off site to dispose of their residential e-waste. Facilities Management also accepts inkjet and laserjet cartridges. Cell phone recycling boxes are distributed by the Environment, Health and Safety office. They are located in the student union, several libraries, and the recreation center. UCLA Software Central coordinates DVD and CD recycling.
Additionally, the UCLA store has a trade-in center where students can bring ewaste like old computer monitors, camcorders and game systems to be traded in for a gift card that can be used in the student store.
