The Center for Service in Action, which served as a hub for community engagement, was closed in 2012. However, various units on campus incorporated community engagement into existing programs such as Housing, Social Ecology, and the Cross-Cultural Center, just to name a few.
UCI has a Civic Engagement minor that is designed to increase student’s understanding of environmental, social, educational, and other public problems from different disciplinary perspectives. Students learn how community and non-profit organizations and public policy address significant social and environmental issues.
The minor encourages student to connect their major to public problems and concerns about equity and social justice and conduct community-based research to help understand and address public problems in community settings.
