A brief description of the socially responsible investment option for retirement plans:
The UC Retirement Savings Program allows employees to invest in a variety of funds, including the following: Vanguard FTSE Social Index Fund Some individuals choose investments based on social and personal beliefs. For this type of investor, we have offered Vanguard FTSE Social Index Fund since 2005. This low-cost fund seeks to track a benchmark of large- and mid-capitalization stocks that have been screened for certain social, human rights, and environmental criteria. In addition to stock market volatility, one of the fund’s other key risks is that this socially conscious approach may produce returns that diverge from those of the broad market. See: https://ucfocusonyourfuture.mysecurebenefitsportal.com/Content/downloads/Vanguard_F0223.pdf Calvert Social Index Fund (CSXAX) The Fund employs a passive management strategy designed to track, as closely as possible, the performance of the Calvert Social Index. The Fund uses a replication index method, investing in the common stock of each company in the Index in about the same proportion as represented in the Index itself. The Calvert Social Index measures the performance of those companies that meet the sustainable and socially responsible investment criteria and that are selected from the universe of approximately the 1,000 largest U.S. companies, based on total market capitalization, included in the Dow Jones Total Market Index. The Index is reconstituted once a year based on an updated list of the 1000 largest U.S. companies, and is reviewed quarterly to adjust for sustainable and responsible investment criteria and other factors.
