A brief description of the cultural competence trainings and activities:
UCI BREADTH REQUIREMENTS
UCI is committed to the values of a liberal education. One component of that commitment is the requirement that all undergraduates complete a set of general education requirements. Multicultural Studies is a graduation requirement for each undergraduate student.

UCI CORE LEADERSHIP COMPETENCIES PROGRAM
All student leaders at UC Irvine have the opportunity to develop core leadership competencies through their roles as employees, interns, and volunteers. We believe these competencies will prepare our students to become transformational leaders, empowered to create positive change on this campus and in their local, national, and global communities. Dozens of opportunities are offered annually for students, and the Student Life and Leadership office has developed a website allowing students to build and track their leadership development. There are five competencies; two are specific to cultural competence: Valuing Diversity and Social Responsibility.
IDENTITY DEVELOPMENT LEADERSHIP SEMINARS
The Cross-Cultural Center annually offers Identity Development Leadership Seminars to students who are looking to continue their growth. These seminars were created for students to critically engage in conversations, to acquire new skill sets, and to prepare students to take action.
ANNUAL RAINBOW FESTIVAL
The Rainbow Festival and Conference is a three-day event that celebrates existing diversity at UCI and educates around issues of social justice. See: http://hogwarts.ccc.uci.edu/rbf/
R.E.A.C.H.
Reaffirming Ethnic Awareness and Community Harmony, known as R.E.A.C.H., is an educational outreach program coordinated by the Cross-Cultural Center. It is devoted to increasing awareness and knowledge of the issues and topics important to community harmony in a multicultural world. R.E.A.C.H. consists of a select group of UCI students trained through a year-long class (AfAm 198) to present workshops on multicultural and ethnic diversity topics. R.E.A.C.H. facilitators are chosen from various segments of the campus community, and share a dedication to building a harmonious academic and social environment at UCI. SUMMER MULTICULTURAL LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE
Incoming first-year students begin meeting fellow student leaders and learn about the various aspects of campus life and leadership development. The Summer Multicultural Leadership Institute, which occurs on UCI’s campus, is a selective program that allows participants the chance to engage in unique workshops and challenging dialogues focused on such topics as diversity, social justice, free speech, and conflict resolution. Fifty students are selected to attend SMLI, and it is our hope that each student participant becomes a future ambassador for UCI’s campus. See: http://ccc.uci.edu/CCC_Web/Programs/SMLI.php
CROSS-CULTURAL CENTER RETREAT
Every fall quarter, the Cross-Cultural Center (CC) staff invites student organizations to participate in a weekend retreat, dedicated to learning about the Cross-Cultural Center, developing student leadership skills, and meeting and networking with the staff and affiliated student organizations of the Cross-Cultural Center. The Multicultural Leadership Retreat is also a great time for students to be a part of the CCC strategic planning as participants reflect on the CCC mission, vision, and values and how their own organizational mission fits with the CCC's. See: http://www.ccc.uci.edu/CCC_Web/Programs/MLR.php
In addition, UCI holds dozens of academic and co-curricular workshops, programs, speakers and cultural events each quarter that are tailored to a historical or a current topic in cultural competence.
