A brief description of how the physical campus plan or amendment includes sustainability:
Sustainability involves the consideration of environmental, economic, and social factors in a comprehensive manner to ensure long-term environmental quality, economic growth, and public health. The UCI Long Range Development Plan(LRDP), first conceived in 1963 and most recently revised in 2007, provides a living master plan demonstrating these key factors as implemented through a long-term master plan. Nearing its 50th year of implementation, the plan and its supporting elements provide a dynamic example of a sustainable community that encompasses a wide range of sustainability issue areas including:
• Affordable Live-Work Housing
• Density Management and Urban Design
• Community-wide Green Building Program
• Pedestrian Orientation/Human Scale
• Sustainable Transportation Systems
• Green and Renewable Energy Systems
• Climate Protection
• Sustainable Landscaping
• Water Conservation and Water Quality
Implementation of the LRDP has produced significant results in regard to sustainability. The following are a few of the results:
• An estimated reduction of 39 million vehicle miles per year
• A combined heat and power plant that reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 39,000 metric tons of CO2 equivalent per year
• 425 acres of open space network designated as permanent habitat on campus
• More than 10 miles of shared bicycle/pedestrian paths, bridges, and lanes
