Data source(s) and notes about the submission:
The total number of students reported here corresponds to the number of undergraduate students at UC Davis, representing UC Davis’s predominant student body. Graduate students were excluded since they do not participate in the UC Undergraduate Experience Survey. The reported number of students is for the 2021-2022 schoolyear, since the survey was last administered in Spring of 2022.

Data for Parts 1 and 2 is taken from the UC Undergraduate Experience Survey. This survey is administered to undergraduates across the UC System every two years. It asks a number of questions regarding students’ time allocation, including how many hours a week they spend during the academic year “performing community service or volunteer activities”. In 2022, the community service question received 3,128 responses from UC Davis participants, amounting to a representative sample of UC Davis undergraduate students. To arrive at the reported number of students engaged in community service, the percentage of responses to each category (0 hours, 1-5 hours, 6-10 hours, …, 26-30 hours, more than 30 hours) was extrapolated to the entire undergraduate student body. Each category was then conservatively assigned an average number of hours worked (1-5 hours: 2 hour average; 6-10 hours: 7.5 hour average; 11-15 hours: 12.5 hour average; … 26-30 hours: 27.5 hour average; more than 30 hours: 31 hour average) to arrive at the total number of student community service hours contributed weekly, which was multiplied by 30 to find the total number of hours contributed annually.

The Worklife Office, a branch of UC Davis Human Resources, has a volunteer opportunities webpage that strongly encourages all staff and faculty to participate in community service. There are numerous volunteer opportunities to accommodate all schedules and interests as well as reasons why staff and faculty should volunteer.
