Does the institution offer at least one immersive, sustainability-focused educational study program that is one week or more in length?:
Yes
A brief description of the sustainability-focused immersive program(s) offered by the institution:
- Global Affairs has launched the inaugural Global Campus Theme, which engages the entire UC Davis community in discussions, learning, discovery, and action on topics linked to one or more of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The inaugural theme is Food for Thought: Feeding Ourselves, Feeding the Planet. More information and schedule of events.
- Global Learning Hub offers the Global Engagement Opportunity (GEO), a one-year residential living-learning community that provides students an opportunity for cross cultural exchange. One key tenant of this program is the weekly for-credit seminar course which addresses a variety of topics of global importance and which align with the UN SDGs. More information.
- Through the Blum Center for Developing Economies, the Global Learning Hub offers undergraduate and graduate grants that help student pursue projects that address poverty alleviation. Many of these projects are undertaken as part of a formal study abroad program for credit.
- Global Learning Hub is developing a new pilot Global Learning Project program which pairs students from two or more universities (UC Davis plus international partners) on short, 2-3 week project oriented internships with local industry or community organizations. Each of the projects will address a global issue of mutual importance with the partner universities. The pilot program, launching June 2020, will focus on water resources and impacts on wildfires in California, and partners with students and faculty from University of Sydney.
- Global Learning Hub offers a number of for-credit summer internship programs: Wildlife, conservation, and veterinary medicine in Australia, and a similar program in Thailand, each focusing on sustainable land use and wildlife conservation (see below for link); Ag Science and Sustainability in Costa Rica, focusing on sustainable tropical agriculture at a 8,300 acre rainforest university (see below for link); Global Policy internships in conjunction with the UC Washington Program in Washington DC (see below for link).
- A number of Global Health internships that explore issues of child and family health, rural medicine, reproductive health, holistic healing, and health care for immigrant and refugee populations: Pediatric Care and Reproductive Health in Ghana (see below for link); Public Health, Rural/Urban Medicine in India (see below for link); Remote Island Medicine in Philippines (see below for link); Healthcare Challenges in South Africa (see below for link); Hospital Medicine and Infectious Disease in South Africa (see below for link); Holistic Healing in Hawaii (see below for link); Immigrant and Refugee Health in California (see below for link).
- Global Learning Hub offers a number of for-credit short-term Seminars Abroad programs:
Water management in a major metropolitan context, in Mexico City (see below for link); Ecology in Antarctica which explores the impact of global climate change on polar ecosystems (see below for link); A winter break program that examines global socioeconomic and political forces that impact rural populations in Mexico, through the Oaxacalifornia-Multiethnicity and Migration program (see below for link); A late summer program that investigates the history of human rights and democracy in Chile and Peru (see below for link).
- Global Learning Hub offers a wide range of for-credit Summer Abroad programs: Culture, Wildlife and Activism in Tanzania, looking at issues of conservation, indigeneity, and local politics (see below for link); Science and Society in Middle East (Lebanon), addressing contemporary environmental challenges (see below for link); Thailand – Microbiology in the Kingdom of Smiles, looks at international health issues and the changing environment in the context of microbiologic diversity (see below for link); Iceland – Thermodynamics in Land of Fire and Ice provides students with field work around geothermal and hydroelectric resources in Iceland, through the lens of renewable power policy (see below for link); Spain – Housing and Urbanism in Barcelona addresses architecture and urban landscaping with focus on community identity and activism around thriving urban development (see below for link); Sustainable Cities of Northern Europe provides students a project-oriented approach to urban development with sustainability in mind, students learn about renewable energy systems, waste management, city planning, transportation, and quality of life (see below for link); Environmental Justice in Indigenous Ecuador provides extensive field work with rural indigenous communities of the Andes and Amazon of Ecuador with special focus on environmental justice and human rights (see below for link).
- Geology 136: Ecogeomorphology Each year, the Ecogeomorphology course examines an issue that impacts the management of river and stream ecosystems. During class, the students discuss this issue in detail, review published literature, and prepare individual reports for publication on the web. Following the period of classroom study, the students conduct a two-week field study of a selected watershed. These field studies involve collection of original information on aquatic and riparian ecology, hydrology and fluvial geomorphology. Students work in teams, sharing their unique expertise with other team member. Through collaboration the student becomes teacher, much as they will in their professional lives. With field studies in Alaska, northern California, British Columbia and the Grand Canyon, students also participate in a capstone course that they will never forget. Geology 136 - Ecogeomorphology:
