The green building guidelines or policies:
Our Institutional Sustainability Strategy confirms that the University of Calgary aims to be a Canadian leader in high performance green buildings and sustainable sites practices. It also confirms aims related to energy efficiency, water stewardship, waste reduction, among other objectives. We employ sustainability practices in design, construction, operations and maintenance of our buildings. Our High Performance Green Building program aims to conserve energy and water, promote healthy and resilient open spaces and eco-systems, reduce waste and water consumption, promote indoor environmental quality, support markets for environmentally preferable materials while providing healthy work, learning, and living spaces that optimize learning and productivity.
All recently constructed buildings are LEED registered, designed to LEED Gold standards and are currently pursuing LEED certification. LEED Gold standards satisfy all of the below green building guidelines / policies. The university’s Design Standards are also aligned with our high performance green building program.
Do the green building guidelines or policies cover the following?:

Impacts on the surrounding site (e.g. guidelines to reuse previously developed land, protect environmentally sensitive areas, and otherwise minimize site impacts) | Yes |
Energy consumption (e.g. policies requiring a minimum level of energy efficiency for buildings and their systems) | Yes |
Building-level energy metering | Yes |
Use of environmentally preferable materials (e.g. guidelines to minimize the life cycle impacts associated with building materials) | Yes |
Indoor environmental quality (i.e. guidelines to protect the health and comfort of building occupants) | Yes |
Water consumption (e.g. requiring minimum standards of efficiency for indoor and outdoor water use) | Yes |
Building-level water metering | Yes |
