Part 1

Does the institution have policies and/or guidelines in place to improve outdoor air quality and minimize air pollutant emissions from mobile sources on campus?:
Yes

None
A brief description of the policies and/or guidelines to improve outdoor air quality and minimize air pollutant emissions from mobile sources:
The University of Calgary utilizes a broad transportation demand management program which includes short-term and secure bike parking throughout campus, student Universal Bus Pass (UPass), carpooling incentives and a campus master plan that seeks to offer more opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students to live on campus. The Long Range Development Plan also confirms a bike plan defining current and planned pathways on campus which connect to off campus community bike paths. The University of Calgary is supporting low-emissions vehicles through electric vehicle charging stations and support for low-emissions car share vehicles on campus. The University of Calgary became an Idle Free campus in fall 2010. All vehicle operators (fleet, commercial and personal) are required to turn off engines when ambient temperature is equal to or greater than -10°C or when the vehicle is left unattended. Signage directs the general public to cease idling.

Part 2

Has the institution completed an inventory of significant air emissions from stationary campus sources or else verified that no such emissions are produced?:
Yes

Weight of the following categories of air emissions from stationary sources::
Weight of Emissions
Nitrogen oxides (NOx) 60.71 Metric tons
Sulfur oxides (SOx) ---
Carbon monoxide (CO) 70.55 Metric tons
Particulate matter (PM) 4.06 Metric tons
Ozone (O3) ---
Lead (Pb) ---
Hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) ---
Ozone-depleting compounds (ODCs) ---
Other standard categories of air emissions identified in permits and/or regulations 1.59 Metric tons

None
A brief description of the methodology(ies) the institution used to complete its air emissions inventory:
The University of Calgary submits annual reports on air emissions from the Central Heating and Cooling Plant to a number of programs including Alberta's Environmental Protection & Enhancement Act, Alberta's Specified Gas Emitter Regulation, Canada's Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program, and Canada's National Pollutant Release Inventory. Engineering calculations based on fuel gas composition, monthly consumption, and equipment specific emissions factors (based on EPA AP42) are used to create the emissions inventory of the Central Heating and Cooling Plant equipment (including boilers and gas fired turbine).
