A brief description of how sustainability is included in new employee orientation (including how multiple dimensions of sustainability are addressed):
All new employees are required to attend a new employee orientation session delivered through Human Resources. The presentation delivered during the session has as section fully devoted to sustainability and includes the following information:
Overview of institutional sustainability commitments and our STARS rating
- Tips for reducing waste (i.e. avoiding bottled water, incentives for using a reusable cup/mug, how to hold a waste free event)
- Facilitation of Weekly Surplus Sales which are aimed to reuse existing office furniture, electronics, supplies and more
- Information about the approximately 20 waste streams UCalgary diverts from landfill including what can be recycled/composted and where
- Information about sustainable transportation options, program and incentives (i.e. carpool, car share, cycling, videoconferencing facilities etc.)
- Tips for saving energy in offices, classrooms and labs which range from turning off lights/equipment to taking the stairs and shutting the sash on fume hoods
- Health and Wellness benefits, resources and programming
- Engagement opportunities (i.e. becoming a Sustainability Coordinator)
All employee are also provided with a Campus Green Tips Pocket to making big impacts through small actions. The pocket guide includes more information and links to resources for making positive change in commuting, energy and water use, waste reduction, responsible purchasing, health and wellness, and more, as well as tuition support for courses in sustainability and ways to get involved.
