A brief description of how the institution ensures compliance with sustainable building operation and maintenance guidelines and policies:
"U of C Design Standards (see URL above) outline practices for new construction, renovation, renewal, and maintenance projects. These standards integrate green building performance requirements including considerations for sustainable sites (e.g. hard and soft landscape consideration, stormwater management, erosion and sedimentation control, light pollution reduction), water efficiency, energy efficiency (including energy performance requirements and product performance requirements), materials and resources (e.g. construction waste management and product selection considerations), and indoor environmental quality (e.g. right to light and views, low emitting materials, indoor air quality protocols during construction, etc.). In ongoing operations the University of Calgary utilizes Green Housekeeping practices in alignment with the Green Housekeeping requirements of LEED Canada for Existing Buildings Operations and Maintenance. Integrated Pest Management practices are also employed. In ongoing purchasing the University of Calgary utilizes sustainable purchasing criteria in all RFP's and more aligns with LEED Canada EBOM credit requirements as follows:
- Desktop computing: EPEAT silver min, Energy STAR qualified
- Furnishings: Greenguard certified where applicable, preferences to products that meet a range of characteristics (recycled content/regional manufacturing/rapidly renewable product content/etc.)
- Consumable products: 100% recycled content toilet paper and paper towels, 30% recycled + FSC content copy paper pricing is offered at a lower price than virgin paper, take back program for toner cartridges, etc.
In waste management the University of Calgary's Institutional Sustainability Plan confirms aggresive targets for the reduction of waste generation and increase in diversion rate. Construction and retrofit projects must achieve a minimum of 75% waste diversion. 100% of institutionally owned e-waste is recycled, more than 20 streams are reused (weekly surplus sale), composted (100% grounds, in progress to campus wide food waste), or recycled on an ongoing basis.
The U of C’s Design Standards (v 1.0) specify requirements for baseline indoor air quality testing, including formaldehyde, PM 10, TVOC and carbon monoxide after construction ends. The U of C has an Indoor Environmental Quality Committee (IEQC), which works toward ensuring healthy work environments at the U of C. More information can be found here:
http://www.ucalgary.ca/safety/indoor
The U of C has an Air Quality (IAQ) program in place across campus. Building occupants can submit any IAQ concerns through a report form, which begins an IAQ resolution process, found here:http://www.ucalgary.ca/safety/files/safety/IAQFlowChart.pdf"

While I originally thought that we might be able to shoot for this, the requirement to link to sustainable building operations and maintenance guidelines or policies will prevent us from going for this.
