The Residence SustainabilityON Coordinators program branched off from the SustainabilityON Coordinators program as value was seen in creating a student only network within residence with tools and training being specifically tailored to their needs. They share information with other residents and coordinate participation in challenges such as the PowerOFF Challenge, RecycleMania and Water Wars (as part of Campus Conservation Nationals). The program is currently being coordinated by Charlene Chia, Residence Life Coordinator for Residence Services and Elise Hetu, Sustainability Engagement Coordinator for the Office of Sustainability. Students participating in the program who contribute 20+ hours are eligible for credit on the Co-Curricular Record (CCR) which is an official document that records students' out-of-classroom experiences. The Office of Sustainability has provided a budget of $1,500 for the year for workshop supplies and motivational prizes for challenges.

Coordinators must commit to contributing at least 20 hours however there is no formal selection process. Done on a volunteer basis.

They participate in four workshops and a tour of the co-generation plant in order to learn about university’s resource use and to learn how they can help reduce that impact. Training includes hands on activities and delivery of a detailed handbook containing information, tools and resources that assist with the delivery of each campaign.

The Office of Sustainability provides a staff member who is responsible for training participants and acting as a resource to SustainabilityON Coordinators. Business units and faculties with SustainabilityON Coordinators can apply for funding via the Energy Efficiency Fund which is U of C's green revolving fund.

A brief description of the program, including examples of peer-to-peer outreach activities (2nd program):
Street Team members can dedicate as much time as they’d like and take on any activities that interest them. Street Team members have participated in activities such as educating attendees of events on how to properly dispose of waste, completing a sustainability course inventory, aiding with advertisements of events, staffing booths for various outreach campaigns, etc. Students participating in the program who contribute 20+ hours are eligible for credit on the Co-Curricular Record (CCR) which is an official document that records a student’s out-of-classroom experience. A budget of $1,500 is provided by the Office of Sustainability to support Street Team initiatives.

No formal selection process. Students can sign up either by emailing sustain@ucalgary.ca or by adding their name to a volunteer sign up sheet made available at various events throughout the year. Participants indicate the number of hours they are able to volunteer and the specific campaigns that they would like to volunteer their time for.

Members attend an orientation at the beginning of the school year to learn about the university's commitments to sustainability and programming to encourage sustainable living. However, The Sustainability Street Team is a very flexible volunteer program designed for those that are unable to formally commit to the time requirements of the SustainabilityON Program or that are interested in rolling out specific initiatives or campaigns. As various sustainability activities and events arise, those that are interested in participating are provided with any training or information necessary for them to successfully complete the task at hand.

Any materials or resources required to execute a task or project assigned by the institution are funded by the institution. Sustainability Street Team members looking to implement a self selected project can either contact the Office of Sustainability directly with a request for support or funding or contact their faculties or business units SustainabilityON Coordinator who in turn can submit a funding request via the revolving energy fund.
