The U of C has not formally evaluated or defined a sustainable wage level as defined above but many initiatives at both the local and national level have proposed such a standard. Vibrant Communities Calgary (VCC), a local organization, defines a living wage to be $12.25 (plus benefits) or $13.50 (in lieu of benefits). The wage is based on Statistics Canada 2008 Low Income Cut-Off (LICO). Benchmarking against this standard, at least 4452 of the university’s 4782 staff earn at or above a sustainable wage level.
