A brief description of how the employee educators are selected (1st program):
The award-winning Sustainability Coordinator (SC) Program provides UBC Vancouver staff and faculty with opportunities and resources to promote and implement sustainable practices in UBC departments. Sustainability Coordinators (SCs) are UBC employees who contribute 2 - 4 hours of paid work time per month to promote and implement sustainability related campaigns and practices in their workplace. The use of 2 - 4 hours of paid work time is approved by UBC's Board of Governors and is in place to help embed sustainability into a staff members' job responsibilities. As of 2014, the SC Program expanded to lab staff through the Green Labs Program.
All UBC Vancouver employees are eligible to participate in the SC Program. Employees are recruited to the program via a number of different recruitment tactics. Employees can learn about the program at the quarterly New Faculty and Staff Orientations, online via the UBC Sustainability and Risk Management Services websites, via word of mouth from colleagues, and through targeted recruitment. Employees may apply to the program at any point throughout the year.

A brief description of the formal training that the employee educators receive (1st program):
Launched in 1999, the SC Program aims to engage employees at UBC Vancouver in sustainability and to provide them with the support, awareness, skills and tools needed to foster sustainability in their department. SCs help to:
• inspire colleagues to make positive changes in energy, waste, food, purchasing and transportation and more;
• provide information about the ecological impact of daily workplace activities;
• identify more sustainable initiatives in their department;
• communicate UBC sustainability policies, procedures, news and events;
• make sustainability easy and fun.
All new SCs must attend the SC Training Session within one year of joining the program. The training sessions helps equip SCs with the relevant knowledge and skills to advance sustainable practices in their departments. SCs also have the opportunity to attend quarterly lunch and learns to broaden their knowledge in sustainability related issues on and off campus. Additionally, every SC is also given an orientation to the program which includes a visit from the program coordinator and an online orientation guide to help new SCs better understand their role, the resources available to them through the program and to help them assess their department's current sustainability practices and goals. Finally, SCs have access to the SC Toolkits. For office SCs, this is a series of online tools in energy conservation, greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction, green event planning, sustainable purchasing, sustainable transportation choices and waste reduction. Tools for lab SCs include lab energy and water conservation, solid and hazardous waste management, aqueous waste and green purchasing. The tools provide SCs and their co-workers with step-by-step actions on how to implement sustainable solutions in their departments.
