A brief description of the farmers’ market:
UBC FARM MARKET AND CAMPUS MARKET http://landfood.ubc.ca/ubcfarm/market_garden.php The UBC Farm hosts an on-site, student-driven farm market every Saturday, 9:00am-1:00pm from June through October. The market attracts customers from the surrounding community to purchase and learn about fresh, sustainably produced local food, thus providing opportunities to become actively engaged in food system citizenship. In addition to selling a wide variety of its own fresh, organically produced-veggies, fruits, herbs, flower bouquets and free range eggs, the UBC Farm also provide a site for other local growers, bakers and craftspeople to sell their goods. Every week features live, local musicians. The Farm also hosts seasonal events throughout the summer that allow the community to engage with the Farm in a more meaningful way. These often draw large crowds and feature bee tours, blackberry picking and fun activities for children and families. The UBC Farm Market has been consistently expanding since it was initiated in 2001. In addition to the full-scale, on-site Saturday Farm Market, the UBC Farm hosts a Campus Market in front of the UBC Bookstore on Wednesdays from 11:30am-1:30pm, a popular Community-Supported Agriculture (CSA) Box Program and direct sales to local restaurants. As a member of the British Columbia Association of Farmers’ Markets (BCAFM), The UBC Farm Market adheres to the Association’s primary guideline, the make/bake/grow/raise policy. All products sold at the market must be made, baked, grown, raised, wild harvested or caught in BC. ABOUT THE UBC FARM http://landfood.ubc.ca/ubcfarm/ The Centre for Sustainable Food Systems (CSFS) is home to the UBC Farm, a 24-hectare teaching, research and community farm located on UBC’s Vancouver campus. Forming a rich mosaic of cultivated fields, teaching gardens, forest stands, hedgerows, and orchard plantings, the Farm is a unique urban agrarian gem. In close proximity and fully integrated with a world-class community of researchers, the CSFS affords an opportunity to better understand and manage the characteristics of the ecosystems that support urbanizing societies. The interface with the city enhances research opportunities that also address community, ecosystem and global health.
