A brief description of the cultural competence trainings and activities:
UBC offers a variety of cultural competence trainings and activities related to equity and diversity that are available to all students. Key trainings include the Equity Ambassador Program, workshops offered through the Equity Office, Access and Diversity, the Centre for Intercultural Communication, the Centre for Teaching Learning and Technology, and the Positive Space Campaign.
EQUITY AMBASSADOR PROGRAM

The Equity Ambassador Program is a student leadership development program based upon the principles of the Social Change Model of Leadership and is supported by the Access and Diversity. Students in this program use creative means to raise awareness about equity issues with current and potential UBC students. The Equity Ambassadors have employed the following tools and techniques to achieve the goals of the program: production of a newsletter (Think Equity), dance, lunch hour discussion groups, passive programming (displays, posters, buttons, bookmarks), art and the tenets of ‘guerrilla theatre’. The Equity Ambassador Program aims to create an inclusive learning and working environment for UBC students through socially responsive education and outreach activities. Social justice and dedication to promoting human rights and inclusivity for all students, staff, and faculty is the common goal for all Equity Ambassadors. The Equity Office offers standard and tailored workshops to students, staff and faculty on issues of discrimination, harassment, inclusivity, anti-racism, diversity, and anti-homophobia to help ensure a welcoming and inclusive environment at UBC. Sessions are facilitated by experienced equity advisors and incorporate group exercises, case studies and discussion.

Courage to Act: Diversity Training
Courage to Act is a compilation of short vignettes designed to create positive discussion around issues of discrimination and harassment at the University of British Columbia. This workshop is not designed to prescribe solutions to the issues that are raised within the content. Rather, it provides a starting point to begin addressing discriminatory language, actions and stereotypes both on and off campus. The issues covered in the workshop include: sexual orientation, sexual harassment, racism, disability, and classism.
REALLY? Campaign
This campaign is a comprehensive approach to promoting safe and inclusive communities that draws on the power of peer and cultural influence in society. This model encourages all individuals, regardless of their gender, race, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status to take on leadership roles at the university and in their communities. The goal is to create a community of leaders that encourage bystander responsibility in addressing all forms of discrimination, hate and violence. The project includes passive programming, trained leaders who serve as champions for the program and a train the trainer model designed to help build active bystander capacity in our student population.
In addition, Access and Diversity offers a wide range of diversity and disability awareness programming tailored to the specific campus and community audiences.

The Centre for Intercultural Communication (CIC) offers programs and services to develop intercultural awareness, understanding and skills for today’s increasingly global academic and business environments. With over 20 years of experience, the CIC's highly experienced staff have designed and delivered leading-edge programs and services to help people work more effectively in diverse cultural settings, internationally and domestically. The CIC offers courses for International Students, designed to teach specialized skills to help students succeed in educational settings abroad and to understand and respond appropriately to cross-cultural issues.

The Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology (CTLT) offers opportunities and resources to enhance teaching and learning on the issues of diversity, equity and intercultural understanding at UBC and beyond. CTLT Living Lab develops and performs short interactive theatre sketches that involve members of the UBC community in conversations about the complexities and challenges that arise in diverse and multicultural teaching and learning environments. Global Citizenship offers a variety of programs, workshops, and resources to assist the UBC teaching community in meeting our goals of fostering global citizenship.
POSITIVE SPACE CAMPAIGN

The Positive Space Campaign is an initiative intended to help make UBC more receptive to and welcoming of its lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, questioning, transgender, transsexual, gender variant, two-spirit and intersex (LGBQTTI) communities, individuals and issues of sexual and gender diversity on campus. All UBC students, staff and faculty are welcome to participate in Positive Space campaign workshops.
