Does the institution have a policy, plan, and/or strategies to reduce stormwater runoff from new development projects? :
Yes

Does the institution have a policy, plan, and/or strategies to reduce stormwater runoff from ongoing campus operations? :
Yes

A brief description of the institution's stormwater management initiatives:

Since 1997, UBC has incorporated innovative stormwater practices into its campus planning and design. The University’s Vancouver Campus consists of four watersheds and requires specific stormwater management strategies that enhances UBC’s natural environment while allowing the campus to grow in a sustainable manner.

As outlined in the new UBC Vancouver Campus Plan (http://www.planning.ubc.ca/vancouver_home/plans_and_policies/campus_planning.php), stormwater management strategies will take a natural systems approach to manage runoff volume and quality within the constraints of UBC’s unique hydrogeology and concerns with cliff erosion. In 2010, a stormwater model was completed and a LIDAR survey and cliff/ravine analysis was completed to determine susceptability to climate change and development-induced stormwater increases.

Does the institution have a living or vegetated roof?:
Yes

A brief description of the institution's living or vegetated roof:

The new Beaty Biodiversity Centre, opened in 2010, is an 11,550-sq. metre, four-storey building designed to facilitate collaboration among researchers from different disciplines. The building has innovative sustainability features such as a green roof and water channel that supports aquatic plants and insects while helping reduce storm water surges.

Does the institution have porous paving?:
Yes

A brief description of the institution's porous paving:

A limited amount of porous paving has been installed on the campus to reduce storm water runoff and increase infiltration. However, in general, this type of infrastructure is not viable on campus, as increased subsurface flows would further compromise the integrity of the cliffs that form the edge of campus.

Does the institution have retention ponds?:
Yes

A brief description of the institution's retention ponds:

We currently have a detention system integrated into the surrounding greenways in our South Campus (Westbrook Place). The result is a creek and pond system that provides the community with a greenway/trail system while having the same efficacy of a detention pond. In addition, the detention pond at TRIUMF is still being utilized and may be expanded to increase it’s capacity.

Does the institution have stone swales?:
Yes

A brief description of the institution's stone swales:

Stone swales have been used to capture storm water runoff and reduce velocity and volume.

Does the institution have vegetated swales?:
Yes

A brief description of the institution's vegetated swales:

The bio-swales are used as above ground conveyance routes to capture and pre-treat stormwater prior to entry into the primary piped conveyance system. In addition, the bio-swales slightly attenuate the peak flows to allow a more consistent discharge into receiving creeks and streams.

Does the institution employ any other technologies or strategies for stormwater management?:
