A brief description of steps taken to ensure that e-waste is recycled responsibly, workers’ basic safety is protected, and environmental standards are met:

UBC has partnered with Encorp Pacific (Canada) (http://www.return-it.ca/electronics/recycling/) and E-Cycle Solutions (http://www.ecyclesolutions.com/) to ensure that e-waste is recycled in an environmentally- and ethically-responsible manner. Both organizations work under the BC Electronic Product Stewardship Plan (http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/epd/recycling/electronics/index.htm) to process e-waste to reclaim raw materials such as glass, metals, and plastics, with all recycling operations taking place in Canada.

Students and faculty at the UBC Graduate School of Journalism recently won an Emmy Award for an investigative news documentary that explores the health and environmental impacts of electronic waste. A brief description of the electronic waste recycling program for institution-generated materials:

Institution generated e-waste can be collected by UBC Waste Management or dropped off at one of several collection points across campus. A pilot program is underway to expand UBC Waste Management’s e-waste collection services.

Stewardship Program Approved Items:
