A brief description of the incentives or programs:
In order to build a more sustainable university community, UBC is developing a Housing Action Plan to improve housing choice and affordability for faculty, staff and students on the Vancouver campus. The Housing Action Plan will take place between Spring 2011 and Spring 2012. To date UBC has provided rental and long-term lease housing options to faculty and staff at UBC at below market costs. At present there are 537 units of staff and faculty rental housing offered at below market rates. While currently under review as part of the Housing Action Plan work, UBC has also previously offered a co-development program to help staff/faculty purchase homes on campus. There are currently 198 co-development units on campus.
UBC Vancouver has more student housing than any other university campus in Canada, with 8,500 beds and another 500 beds opening in fall 2011. As part of our efforts to reduce the number of students commuting to and from campus, UBC has also created the capacity to house 50% of current students on campus, with a plan for 2,500 new beds in the next five years.
