A brief description of programs and strategies institution has implemented to ensure the code is followed, including a brief description of instances when vendor code of conduct has changed purchasing behavior within the last five years, if applicable:
In 2008, Supply Management developed and implemented principles of sustainability and a Supplier Code of Conduct for procurement. In 2010/11, efforts have been focused on embedding weighted criterion based on sustainability and including the Supplier Code of Conduct into bid documents, and working directly with preferred suppliers on waste and emission management strategies.
UBC Supply Management works directly with vendors to increase vendor and community engagement in respect to our Supplier Code of Conduct. Some examples include:
• Working with Fisher Scientific to launch the Laboratory Plastics Recycling Program. Fisher/Corning donate $40 per bin recycled, which goes to the Green Research Committee and is used for sustainable scientific purposes.
• Working with Acklands Grainger to begin the Reusable Totes program, which eliminated over 7,100 lbs of packaging in 2010 by using reusable totes for our deliveries.
• Working on the Sustainability Scorecard that will be submitted quarterly by our contracted vendors.
