A brief description of steps the institution has taken to ensure that the purchasing policy, directives, or guidelines are followed:
UBC Building Operations has adopted a ‘Green Housekeeping Program‘ that encompasses a number of comprehensive green cleaning/housekeeping initiatives which are being incorporated into the everyday operations of Custodial Services.
As part of the Green Housekeeping Program, Custodial Services is committed to using high quality, non-toxic EcoLogo certified cleaning products (or Approved Alternates) in all spaces to ensure a healthy indoor environment for staff and visitors, and a safe working environment for staff, faculty and students. The following steps will continue to be undertaken to ensure the continued quality of our service and to uphold this commitment:
1. Custodial staff are given the opportunity to trial products and provide feedback prior to purchasing eco-friendly products.
2. The personnel responsible for maintenance and operations of the building have been trained and follow the requirements of the Green Housekeeping Program.
Currently 78% of buildings serviced by Custodial Services have portion controlled, Green Seal certified, chemical dispensing units. These chemicals are dispensed using custom dispensers that are mounted to the janitorial room walls and help reduce the amount of chemicals used whilst ensuring proper dilution and saving money. The goal is to switch the remainder of the academic buildings serviced by Custodial Services to the portion controlled, Green Seal certified, chemical dispensing units by 2012.
