A brief description of the postconsumer food waste composting program:
As part of an ongoing commitment to developing sustainable business practices, the goal of Food Services is to reduce the quantity of solid matter that enters the waste stream. Working with UBC Waste Management, pre- and post-consumer organic waste is composted in an in-vessel compost facility on campus and is used as fertilizer for UBC grounds. By composting waste and using the biodegraded product on campus, the amount of waste going into the usual waste stream was reduced by over 125 tons last year. http://www.food.ubc.ca/sustainability/sustainability-initiatives
The AMS has also included post-consumer composting stations in dining areas and are working on incorporating more tri-bin waste stations around the SUB. Additionally, in February of 2011, the AMS worked collaboratively with a student doing a SEEDS project to introduce vermicomposting of post-consumer food waste into the AMS' prep kitchen. This pilot project is expanding over the summer with a 'worm wig wam' with an initial 25 pounds of worms. At full capacity, the AMS expects to compost 75 pounds per week of post-consumer food waste. The AMS' only sit-down dining establishment, the Pendulum, has been composting 100% of the post-consumer food waste since 2005. http://www.ams.ubc.ca/campus-life/ams-sustainability/what-we-are-doing/
