A brief description of how the institution ensures compliance with green building design and construction guidelines and policies:
Dates the policies or guidelines were adopted: 1) Green standards incorporated into Technical Guidelines in 2002 2) All LEED prerequisites added to Technical Guidelines in 2008 3) LEED Gold certified and 42% below MNECB requirement added in 2009 INSTITUTIONAL CONSTRUCTION UBC started incorporating green building requirements into its Technical Guidelines, which are mandatory for all institutional new construction and major renovations, in 2002. Another layer of accountability was added by the provincial government in 2008. Since 2008, the Province of BC has required all public sector new construction and major renovations to be certified LEED Gold. UBC has consistently upheld this requirement, and went further by adding its own minimum energy performance threshold (42% below Canada's Model National Energy Code for Buidings). Within the new Vancouver Campus Plan Design Guidelines, UBC made additional LEED credits mandatory: stormwater rate and quantity management, and 75% construction waste diversion. http://www.technicalguidelines.ubc.ca/technical/sustainability.html RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION UBC created its own Residential Environmental Assessment Program (REAP) in 2006. REAP is a green building rating system that is mandatory for all multifamily homes built at UBC. REAP applies to private developers and UBC-as-developer alike, including rental homes and homes for sale, whether they are for students, faculty & staff, or the general market. http://sustain.ubc.ca/campus-sustainability/greening-the-campus/residential-environmental-assessment-program

Data source(s) and notes about the submission:
UBC has two LEED Gold certified buildings, completed in 2004 and 2005. From 2008 on, all new construction and major renovations are mandated to be LEED Gold certified. Construction is complete on three major renovations that will soon recieve their final LEED certification. An additional five buildings are LEED registered and under construction, expected to be complete between 2011 and 2013. These buildings are all on track to achieve a minimum of LEED Gold and will be certified. Three more buildings are registered with LEED, but construction has not yet started.
