B. S. in Plant Sciences prepares students to make a difference on a global scale as a scientist or leader who understands the importance of plants in sustaining environmental and human health. They gain knowledge and skills in biotechnology, genomics, molecular biology, plant propagation and breeding, medicinal chemistry, and other modern approaches to 21st-century agriculture.
Students also learn about the fundamental biological processes of plants and how to apply that knowledge to solve problems such as how we can help plants adapt to a changing climate and resist diseases and pests. A B.S. in Plant Sciences equips students with a strong foundation to pursue graduate work or a career in areas such as plant breeding or research, with applications in medicine, pharmacy, microbiology, agriculture and more.

A brief description of the undergraduate minor or concentration:
An emphasis in Leadership, Sustainability, and Communication within the Environmental Science Bachelor of Science identifies practical and powerful ways to advocate for the environment. Students immerse themselves in environmental laws, regulations, and policies. They discover how to be part of a successful response to pollution, natural resource management, and climate change. Students gain a broad scientific understanding of society's influence on the planet and learn how to interpret and clearly communicate the current environmental problems. More importantly, they learn to predict how landscapes change under the effects of climate, geology, and land use, and what actionable steps are needed to create a sustainable future.

Mining engineers find new ways to improve mining operations and use and preserve natural resources. The world depends on mining engineers to advance all aspects of mineral extraction, from mine design and transfer of materials to land reclamation. Students in the Bachelor of Science in Mining Engineering program immerse themselves in specific areas of study, such as mine operations, geomechanics, sustainable resources and mineral processing. They gain work experience in the student-run San Xavier Underground Mine and network with industry leaders through the J. David Lowell Institute of Mineral Resources and national professional societies. Paid internships and sponsored capstone projects provide opportunities for undergraduates to work with mining and energy companies and equipment firms. Graduates are well prepared for fast entry into jobs around the globe.

Rural communities routinely face a multitude of challenges, from economic stagnation, population decline, and environmental degradation, to public health crises, persistent systemic racism, and, in the case of many indigenous peoples, the continued effects of a long history of willful neglect. In the Rural Leadership & Renewal emphasis, you'll learn how to create opportunities for overcoming these challenges through innovation in the public and applied humanities, agricultural production, e-commerce, environmental entrepreneurship, and sustainable tourism. In the process, you'll develop skills in project planning, community enrichment, environmental stewardship, entrepreneurial strategy, innovation literacy, and intercultural competence.
