Documentation

A copy of the institution’s inventory of its sustainability course offerings and descriptions:
Do the figures reported above cover one, two, or three academic years?:
One

A brief description of the methodology used to complete the course inventory :

This course inventory was compiled using the syllabi from each college and school within the University of Arizona for Spring, Summer, and Fall 2020. Each course was individually reviewed by students within the Office of Sustainability for whether it matched AASHE STARS definitions for “sustainability inclusive” or “sustainability focused”. Furthermore, the sustainable inclusive and focused courses were classified within the United Nations Sustainability Goals.

How were courses with multiple offerings or sections counted for the figures reported above?:
Each course was counted as a single course regardless of the number of offerings or sections

A brief description of how courses with multiple offerings or sections were counted:

Every course was only counted once, including both sections of the course and if it was cross referenced. For example, the class “Introduction to Computer Aided Design” is offered as both ABE 221 and ENGR 221 but was only counted once. All cross references were added to the “Department(s)” column of our spreadsheet in order to keep track of them. All duplicate courses were removed using conditional formatting in Excel.

The number of departments in this inventory is different from PRE-5 because courses are coded more specifically than the department they are housed in. For example, one of the departments we counted in PRE-5 was the School of Middle Eastern & African Studies. Within that department, there are several more class codes such as ARB or MENA for specific topics. For the course inventory, we counted all of the class codes, not just the overall departments they are under.

Data source(s) and notes about the submission:

Courses were analyzed using the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Each course’s description was read in order to have a thorough analysis of courses offered at the University of Arizona. Courses that had unclear course descriptions were not included in the count for “sustainability-inclusive” or “sustainability-focused” courses.

The University of Arizona no longer maintains a Green Course Guide for students, but this could be reimplemented as a way to promote sustainable courses on campus. The number of academic departments differs from PRE-5 because the University of Arizona labels classes with a subject and catalog number. Subjects are under various departments, meaning there are more subjects than departments. For example, WFSC (Wildlife & Fisheries Science) is a subject in the course code but it is under the department of Natural Resources & the Environment. Since we sort our classes by subject, we used subject codes in place of departments.
