Total percentage of the institution’s employees that use more sustainable commuting options as their primary method of transportation:

A brief description of the method(s) used to gather data about employee commuting, including the timeframe for when the analysis was conducted and how a representative sample was reached, if applicable:

The University of Alberta Greenhouse Gas and Commuting survey is conducted every two to three years by Energy Management and Sustainable Operations (EMSO), Facilities and Operations.

For the 2019 iteration, EMSO worked with the university’s Test Scoring and Questionnaire Services (TSQS) to conduct the survey, and retained an external consultant to analyze the results.

The survey was conducted in March 2019 using an electronic survey tool. The survey was sent to a statistically representative sample of graduate students, undergraduate students, post-doctoral fellows, faculty, and staff at the four Edmonton campuses (North Campus, South Campus, Campus Saint-Jean, and Enterprise Square) and to all students, faculty, and staff at the Augustana Campus. Reminder emails were sent until a sufficient response rate was achieved.

The base survey instrument asks respondents to report their role at the university, their primary commute mode, any changes in their mode since the previous year, the reason for any upcoming planned changes, and the first three digits of their postal code. Depending on the year, a few other questions may be added to the end of the survey, for example to assist with the assessment of current initiatives as applicable.

The percentage of the institution's employees that use each of the following modes as their primary means of transportation to and from campus::
Percentage (0-100)
Commute with only the driver in the vehicle (excluding motorcycles and scooters) 40.23
Walk, bicycle, or use other non-motorized means 20.67
Vanpool or carpool 8.86
Take a campus shuttle or public transportation 30.25
Use a motorcycle, scooter or moped ---
Telecommute for 50 percent or more of their regular work hours ---
