NOTE: The University of Alberta uses the BOMA BEST Portfolio Stream option for its portfolio of BOMA BEST certified buildings. As per the BOMA BEST User Guide (available: http://www.bestsustainablebuildings.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/2019-BOMA-BEST-User-Guide-Portfolio-Stream-Building-Manager.pdf):
The Portfolio Stream offers a continuous certification process. It requires that each building be verified every five (5) years, equivalent to verifying 20% of the portfolio per year.

ENERGY MANAGEMENT PROGRAM
https://uab.ca/emso
The University of Alberta has had a very successful energy management program in place since the mid-1970s. Over the past five decades, the university has avoided $394 million in utility costs while preventing over 2.5 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. Annual savings reached $20.4 million in 2017-18.
Energy Management and Sustainable Operations (EMSO) oversees the program, providing energy benchmarking and implementing energy efficiency and conservation measures.

A brief description of the water management or benchmarking program:
WATEGO: PROACTIVE WATER PROTECTION
https://uab.ca/emso
Watego is a campus-wide water stewardship program that invests in innovative water technologies, behaviour change and fixture upgrades. Water audits are under way to benchmark water use in buildings. Reduction goals and implementation plans will then be created on a building-by-building basis. Watego-branded messaging is being installed in washrooms with newly fitted low-flow fixtures.
Watego is the first program of its kind in Alberta and as it grows, it aims to pave the way for other post-secondary institutions wishing to commit to a sustainable water future.

NOTES:
1) The number for the 'Total floor area of building space' in this credit is different from the number in IC-2, because we have excluded spaces which have been certified under a green building rating system that focuses on design and construction during the past five years.
2) The University of Alberta's Indoor Air Quality Progam is further supported by the following additional documents:
IAQ: Odours
IAQ: During Construction
IAQ: Temperature
IAQ: Scents
