A brief description of the institution’s efforts to support alternative fuel and power technology in its motorized fleet:
The university is taking steps to create a more environmentally-friendly vehicle fleet. The university’s vehicle pool is committed to replacing its aging fleet vehicles, as required, with electric, hybrid or ultra-fuel-efficient models whenever a feasible option exists.
Four hybrid delivery vans and two hybrid medium delivery trucks were purchased in 2009, making the university the first educational institution with hybrid mail trucks. Buildings and Grounds Services uses electric and solar-powered grounds carts to transport staff. The university’s vehicle fleet is using E10 gasoline year-round and B5 diesel up to six months of the year. To date, a source of E85 fuel is not available.
A GPS vehicle locator system was deployed in 79 fleet vehicles in 2016. The system will assist the university in reducing travel time and idling. Idle management devices were installed in six vehicles and the university is monitoring their effectiveness. All vehicles used on campus are maintained for optimal efficiency, and multiple van and truck trips on campus have been eliminated by providing a shuttle van for trades groups to move around campus.
