BACHELOR OF ARTS IN ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES

The Faculty of Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences and the Faculty of Arts have worked together to develop this degree, which will educate students in the scientific, cultural, economic, moral, political and social dimensions of environmental issues. As the subject matter transcends the boundaries of any single discipline or faculty, this degree is offered through a collaborative program that draws on the Faculty of Native Studies and the Faculty of Science. This degree provides students with interdisciplinary expertise to identify, frame, and contribute to the solution of environmental problems. They will have a broad educational foundation in environmental studies, social studies and the humanities, for careers in law, business, economics, resource management, journalism, as well as graduate education in either the professions or in research.

The B.A. in Environmental Studies and the B.Sc in Environmental Science examine natural processes in our environment; the dependence of human society on nature; and our impact on nature through culture and technology.
As researchers, students will be able to:
- Apply current methods of inquiry in environmental science/studies.
- Formulate testable scientific hypotheses based on existing theories, design experiments to test such hypotheses, analyze data accurately, and present the results of such experiments appropriately and effectively.
- Develop and execute appropriate sampling techniques to draw inferences about environmental processes and broader scientific and social theories.
- Recognize the limitations of methods used in environmental science/studies and develop skills to overcome these limitations.
- Choose appropriate mathematical and statistical approaches to analyze environmental data.
As communicators, students will be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, regarding knowledge of environmental science/studies, its methodologies, key concepts, and issues to both professional and lay audiences. As thinkers, students will be able to:
- Know the fundamental physical and biological principles that govern natural processes.
- Describe the manner in which earth systems have been modified by human activity over time.
- Integrate information from across the natural sciences, social sciences, and the humanities in the context of complex environmental problems.
- Identify environmental problems, assess key drivers, evaluate problem-solving strategies, and develop multidisciplinary solutions.
- Use contemporary tools and techniques for studying environmental issues.
- Recognize and respect cultural differences regarding natural resource use and management.
- Apply appropriate environmental ethics as an environmental practitioner in the workplace, as a candidate for an advanced degree, and/or as a citizen.

To complete this credit, we examined the required courses for all undergraduate and graduate programs listed in the University of Alberta course calendar. If the program included a mandatory course which was identified as a "sustainability course" in STARS credit AC-1, the program was considered as having a sustainability learning outcome.
The count for total number of graduates from all programs offered by the institution, and the number of graduates from programs covered by sustainability learning outcomes were supplied by the Office of the Registrar. The data provided covered the number of graduates for each undergraduate and graduate program over the past three years (2014/15 to 2016/17), broken down by program.
