Brief descriptions of up to 4 recent notable accomplishments by faculty engaged in sustainability research, including names and department affiliations:
1) A recent study by Mara Erickson and professor Mark Boyce [Department of Biological Sciences] "indicates that the western grebe is able to persist on lakes with shoreline development, while at the same time showing a definite link with the preservation of bulrushes as cover for nests and quiet nesting waters." She’s also developed several child-centred initiatives that are helping improve access to education and other public services." Ashbolt will receive about $4.2 million for the seven-year research program." Website: http://uofa.ualberta.ca/news-and-events/newsarticles/2014/april/making-our-water-safer 4) Ali Abdi (Faculty of Education) is helping to rebuild the Somali National University after decades of civil war. "“It was a very fine university,” says Ali Abdi, a Somali expat and University of Alberta education professor. “Everything was going well.” But when the war erupted in the early 1990s, killing thousands and destroying much of the country’s infrastructure, SNU was badly damaged. In 1991, its operations were suspended indefinitely." Website: http://uofa.ualberta.ca/news-and-events/newsarticles/2014/march/ualberta-professors-to-help-restore-somali-university

Data source(s) and notes about the submission:
Each University of Alberta Department website was browsed for permanent research faculty profiles. Teaching or other instructional faculty were not included in totals. Each profile was summed to acquire the total number of research faculty profiles and each profile was examined for fit with the University of Alberta sustainability definition. Faculty that work in departments which by the nature of their discipline contribute to health and wellbeing were summed without indicating their research interests. A number of medical research departments do not list their faculty research profiles, and these departments were contacted directly to acquire their total number of permanent research faculty.
