MASTER OF SCIENCE AND PHD IN RENEWABLE RESOURCES

There are four major research themes in the MSc and PhD in Renewable Resources: Biodiversity Conservation, Enhanced Forest Management, Environmentally Sustainable Agriculture and Land Reclamation, Remediation, and Restoration. Since each research theme contains sustainability learning outcomes, the overall programs were also identified as containing sustainability outcomes. Biodiversity Conservation aims at understanding how biological diversity is affected by land use practices and human actions. Enhanced Forest Management focuses on intensive and ecological management practices to promote wood production and other non-timber values from forests. Environmentally Sustainable Agriculture evaluates and develops agricultural and forestry practices that ensure the sustainability of soil and water resources. Land Reclamation, Remediation, and Restoration focuses on the impact of a variety of land use activities on ecosystem function and techniques to return landscapes to a functional use.

The Faculty of Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences and the Faculty of Arts have worked together to develop this degree, which will educate students in the scientific, cultural, economic, moral, political and social dimensions of environmental issues. As the subject matter transcends the boundaries of any single discipline or faculty, this degree is offered through a collaborative program that draws on the Faculties of Native Studies and Science. This degree provides students with interdisciplinary expertise to identify, frame, and contribute to the solution of environmental problems. They will have a broad educational foundation in environmental studies, social studies and the humanities, for careers in law, business, economics, resource management, journalism, as well as graduate education in either the professions or in research.

Environmental Studies/Science examine:
- natural processes in our environment
- the dependence of human society on nature, and
- our impact on nature through culture and technology

To determine this credit, the first step was to look at the required courses for all undergraduate and graduate programs listed in the University of Alberta online calendar. If the program required a course that was listed in ER-6 (sustainability-focused courses) or ER-7 (sustainability-related courses), the program was counted as having sustainability as a required learning outcome.

Additionally, program descriptions for select undergraduate and graduate programs were examined. Although specific sustainability-focused or sustainability-related courses were not required for these programs, they were counted as having sustainability as a required learning outcome if the overall programs contained sustainability learning outcomes.

To get a count of the total number of graduates, as well as the number of graduates from programs covered by sustainability learning outcomes, the Office of the Registrar was asked to provide data about the number of graduates from each undergraduate and graduate program over the past three years (2011 to 2013), broken down by program major.
